How to Sign a PDF Without Printing It (Free Methods for Any Device)
You’ve got a PDF to sign. Maybe it’s a lease, a job offer, an NDA, a W-9. And your first instinct is to print it, scribble your name, scan it back in.
That’s 10-15 minutes of your life you’ll never get back. And nobody needs a scanner anymore.
Here’s how to sign any PDF without printing it, completely free, on any device.
Why People Still Print PDFs to Sign Them
Old habits. That’s mostly it.
A lot of people grew up thinking a “real” signature had to be on paper. But legally, that hasn’t been true for years. In the US, the ESIGN Act (passed in 2000) made electronic signatures just as legally valid as pen-and-ink ones for the vast majority of documents. The EU has eIDAS. Most of the world has something equivalent.
Courts have upheld e-signatures in contract disputes, lease agreements, and employment paperwork. Printing and scanning doesn’t make something more valid. It just makes it more annoying.
Option 1: Sign It Right in Your Browser (Fastest)
If you just need to drop a signature on a PDF and send it back, an in-browser tool is the quickest path. No account required. Nothing to install. Works on any device with a browser.

Option 2: Sign in Preview on Mac

The main limitation: it’s basic. For anything that involves multiple signers or a formal audit trail, a dedicated tool does the job better.
What About Password-Protected PDFs?
If the PDF is locked for editing, you’ll need to remove the restriction before you can sign it. Free tools exist for this and it usually takes about 30 seconds. Once unlocked, any of the methods above work fine.
Is a Digital Signature Actually Legally Binding?
Yes, in most cases.
For standard business and personal documents, including contracts, leases, NDAs, and employment forms, a digital signature is legally valid in the US, EU, UK, Canada, Australia, and most of the world. The ESIGN Act has been on the books for 25 years. It’s settled law.
There are real exceptions worth knowing: wills and trusts in certain states, some real estate closings, and specific government forms that require wet ink. For those, check first. For everything else, you’re covered.

Printers are great for photos, shipping labels, and the occasional boarding pass. They’ve retired from the document-signing business.
